The College of Basic Medical Sciences
About
The College of Basic Medical Sciences was created in May 1989 from the original Basic Medical Department of Shanghai Second Medical University, which itself was founded on August 26, 1955. It provides the foundation for medical teaching, scientific research and teacher cultivation for Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. The college has two national first-class disciplines in basic medicine and pharmacy and three Shanghai top disciplines in basic medicine, biology and pharmacy. One national key discipline (Pathology and Pathophysiology), four key construction disciplines of “211 Project” by Ministry of Education (Medical Molecular Cell Biology, Medical Immunology, Pathology and Pathophysiology, Genetic Development and Reproductive Biology), and two construction disciplines of Shanghai High-level University (Basic Medicine and Pharmacy). Thirty-five degree programs have been established with the approval of the Academic Degree Committee of the State Council since 1984. These include: 5 doctorate programs for first-level disciplines, 15 doctorate programs for second-level disciplines and 15 master’s degree programs for second-level disciplines. In addition, 2 post-doctorate programs for basic medicine and biology have also been established.
The college has 445 staff members at present including 281 full-time teachers (84% of whom have doctoral degrees), 78 professors, 96 associate professors, 65 doctoral supervisors, 48 master instructors, 1 Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 2 National High-level Talent Plan,17 National High-level Youth Talent Plan, 1 leading scholar of “Ten-thousand Talents Project”, 2 members of the “National Youth Top-notch Talent Support Program”, 3 distinguished professors of the "Yangtze River Scholars", 1 member of the "Yangtze River Scholars" Youth Project, 5 chief scientists of projects by the Ministry of Science and Technology, 3 experts granted with special allowances of China State Council, 3 national candidates of the "Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talents Project" by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, 1 “Prominent Educator” award by the Ministry of Education, 2 national outstanding teachers, 26 Baosteel Education Fund outstanding teacher award winners, 4 recipients of “New Century Outstanding Talents Supporting Plan”, 8 winners of the “National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars”, and 9 outstanding young scholars of “National Natural Science Foundation”. The college is home to many world-class research conditions including the Key Laboratory of Cell Differentiation and Apoptosis of the National Ministry of Education, the Shanghai Institute of Immunology, the Shanghai Key Laboratory of Reproductive Medicine, the Shanghai Key Laboratory of Tumor Microenvironment and Inflammation, and the Shanghai Translational Medicine Collaborative Innovation Center. After more than ten years of construction, The Academy of Medical Sciences, established in 2007, currently has 16 distinguished professors, 70 Principle Investigators (PI) and 27 outstanding young teachers.
The college cultivates medical talents with different specialties including clinical medicine, stomatology, biomedical sciences, nursing, medical examination, nutrition, and preventive medicine, with different programs including four-year, five-year, and eight-year program, with multilevel degrees including Doctorate, Master’s degree, and Bachelor’s degree through full-time, continuing or distance education. The College of Basic Medical Science leads the way in education innovation, implement organ system-based integrated curriculum, adopting the new teaching methods, such as "Problem-Based Learning (PBL)" and "Research-Based Learning (RBL)". The French language is integrated to clinical medicine with the distinctive features of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. Besides, the establishment of Ottawa-Shanghai Joint School of Medicine promotes bilingual education and offers instruction in English. Currently, 19 theoretical and 5 experimental teaching teams have been established in support of the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission's “Teaching Incentive Program" which comprehensively promotes the education reform in basic medical sciences through the principles of “team traction, chief responsibility, whole-process incentive and system guarantee". In addition, 14 discipline groups have been established to promote the construction of teaching resource and the postgraduate education. The first biomedical science major in China established by our college has been selected into the "Leading Plan for the first-class undergraduate construction of Shanghai Higher Education Institutions", gathering the excellent faculty of our college and bringing up the outstanding medical scientists and educators with innovative thinking, international vision, lofty ideals and potential leadership skills.
A number of important national research projects have been carried out including research on critical human diseases, which have received substantial recognition. In order to meet the requirements of the new talent cultivation model for translational medicine research, the college launched the Basic-Clinical Medicine Cross-team Construction Project. This work is based on previous cooperation with affiliated clinical hospitals, and is funded by the projects from the Ministry of Education and the Shanghai Education Commission. Six cross-disciplinary and cross-basic-clinical teams have been established with focuses on metabolism, tumors, cardiovascular diseases, neurological diseases, and infectious and immunological diseases. Multiple disciplines at affiliated hospitals collaborate closely.
The college has further laid the technology platform for teams in structural biology, bioinformatics, metabolic research, phenotypic analysis of small animals, and stem cell research. The College of Basic Medical Sciences has created a highly collaborative public platform with high-end facilities and shared resources. The platform has also enhanced its capabilities for proteomics, metabonomics, genomics, microimaging, molecular morphology and structural biology in support of medical teaching, scientific research and teacher cultivation.
