English Journal Development & Excellence Action Plan High Starting Point New Publication Project Seminar was successfully held in Ruijin Hospital on March 29th, 2023. The English journal is the official journal of the College of Health Science and Technology,Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine.
The conference was attended by esteemed scholars and experts, including Yang Lei (杨蕾), general manager of Chinese Laser Press, executive director of China Periodicals Association, and vice chairman and secretary-general of Shanghai Periodicals Association; Liu Zhiqiang (刘志强), deputy director of Periodicals Agency of Shanghai University, deputy director of the Research Department of Chinese University Science & Technology Journals, and director of the academic work department; Ren Shengli (任胜利), chief editor of Science China Press and director of the Chinese Association of Science and Technology Journal Editors; Tan Yi (谈毅), Director of the Journal Center of Shanghai Jiao Tong University; Liu Qian (刘谦), director of the Editorial Department of Asia-Pacific Journal of Clinical Oncology, Journal of Thoracic Oncology, and Asia-Pacific Journal of Oncology Nursing; Jia Zejun (贾泽军), director of the joint editorial Department of Health Promotion and Chinese Journal of Clinical Medicine,and Clinical Cancer Bulletin of Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University; and Pan Fei (潘飞),assistant director of the Journal Center of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Notably, Wang Xuefeng (王学锋), the editor-in-chief of the Medical Research and Innovation, vice dean of the College of Health Science and Technology, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, director of laboratory medicine department of Ruijin Hospital; Hu Yiqun (胡翊群), dean of the College of Health Science and Technology, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine; and Xu Yiping (徐懿萍), director of the Development of Science and Technology Office of Ruijin Hospital, graced the event with their presence. Wang Chaohui (王朝晖), the director of the editorial office of Ruijin Hospital. Chu Jingshen (褚敬申) and Wang Erliang (王尔亮),the editors of Journal of Diagnostics Concepts & Practice attended the meeting. The meeting was chaired by Yuan Qing (袁青), the member of the Party Committee of Ruijin Hospital and secretary of the Party Committee of the College of Health Science and Technology, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine.

Professor Wang Xuefeng, chief editor of Medical Research and Innovation and vice dean of the College of Health Science and Technology, delivered a welcome speech. He introduced the background and original intention of the journal’s preparation, and hoped that the establishment of the new journal could contribute to a positive interaction with the College of Health Science and Technology in terms of discipline development, talent cultivation, and international exchange. He also hoped the journal to be included in SCI database in the near future.

Wang Erliang, editor of the editorial department at Ruijin Hospital, reported on three aspects of the journal’s establishment: the era background, basic conditions and necessity and future planning. Experts at the meeting put forward constructive opinions and suggestions on the journal’s title, aim and scope, the necessity of establishment,related disciplines, organizational structure, operating expenses, personnel, and development goals.
Yang Lei,general manager of Chinese Laser Press, stated that “good wine also needs bush,” and that the academic level and dissemination channels of the journal are equally important. By setting clear publishing goals, paying attention to the internationalization of journal cover design, and using the “conference integration” model,we can gradually move towards the goals through different ways such as hosting international academic conferences, promoting through international platforms.

Liu Zhiqiang,deputy director of Periodicals Agency of Shanghai University, pointed out that academic journals should be closely integrated with the disciplinary characteristics of the College of Health Science and Technology. Professional disciplinary teams, journal staff, support from the Jiao Tong University Journal Center, and an international editorial board are the foundation of the journal's establishment.

Ren Shengli,chief editor of Science China Press, pointed out that the journal’s positioning and direction, the internationalization of editorial board members, and the support and investment from the sponsoring unit are key conditions for the journal’s development. At the beginning of the establishment of the journal, accurate goals and positioningas well as a detailed organizational structure are necessary.

Tan Yi, director of the Jiao Tong University Journal Center, believes that the direction of the journal should reflect emerging interdisciplinary subjects that embody the development strategy of the country. Journals are not isolated from disciplinary development. Academic journals need to be closely integrated with talent cultivation, and expert exchange and introduction Journal development is an important part of disciplinary construction.

Director Liu Qian from the editorial offices of Asia-Pacific Journal of Clinical Oncology, pointed out that journals should be established based on dominant disciplines and focus on the publication purpose and discipline characteristics. Name of the journal should be concise and logical. New publications should develop unique strengths, and highlight the characteristics and advantages of the sponsoring institutions.

Jia Zejun, director of the joint editorial department of Health Promotion, Chinese Clinical Medicine, and Clinical Cancer Bulletinat Zhongshan Hospital affiliated with Fudan University, pointed out that it is challenging to establish comprehensive medical journals. The journal’s necessity, feasibility, and internationalization are key factors in its establishment.

Assistant Director Pan Fei of the Journal Center at Shanghai Jiao Tong University emphasized that the journal’s positioning should reflect “national greatness, medical necessity and public demand.” “National greatness” refers to the country’s major strategic equipment, which has a close relationship with medical technology. “Medical necessity” means that the journal must be developed in close relation with the construction and development of medical disciplines to promote the growth of the disciplines. “Public demand” refers to the role of medical technology journals in promoting public health.

Xu Yiping, director of the Science and Technology Development Office in Ruijin Hospitalsummarized the expert opinions, stated that the office, as the competent authority for Ruijin Hospital’s academic journals, will fully support the establishment of Medical Research and Innovation. They have the confidence toset goals and directions for the journal’s future and aim toorganize a professional team to promote the establishment of this English journal.

Finally, Hu Yiqun, dean of the College of Health Science and Technology,Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine delivered a concluding speech. He first expressed sincere gratitude to all the attending experts, and then affirmed and highly evaluated the opinions and suggestions of the experts. He suggested that the establishment of the journal should be combined with the discipline construction of the College of Health Science and Technology,Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. He believed that with joint efforts, a world-class academic journal can be established soon.
