May 21, 2025

On the morning of May 10, 2025, the 2025 "Extraordinary Pediatricians" series of activities of the School of Pediatrics was successfully held in the West 2 Teaching Building of Jiaotong University School of Medicine. Centered on "Life Care" and "Practical Education", the event provided a bridge for outstanding high school students and young talents across the country to approach and understand medicine through theoretical lectures, experience sharing and skill experiences, fully demonstrating the contemporary value of cultivating outstanding pediatric medical talents. Lin Qian, the director of the School of Pediatrics Office, presided over the event, and Zhang Dandan, the person in charge of student comprehensive affairs, and relevant responsible teachers participated in the event.

The event was held both online and offline, and its content was divided into two parts.

The first part was the "Xuesen Challenge Program" medical course of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine - "Experience Medicine, Explore the Unknown of Life". The course aimed to "strengthen talent cultivation, guide students with aspirations, interests, and talents to establish the personal ideal of walking with medicine, and help them better understand and love medicine." The Children's Hospital invited Dr. Zhu Yuenniu, an associate chief physician from the Department of Pediatric Intensive Care at Xinhua Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, to give a live lecture. She shared her growth journey from a medical student to a pediatrician under the title of "Saving a Life, the High Point of Life". She admitted that pediatricians need "double armor": one is solid professional skills to deal with the rapidly changing challenges of children's diseases; the other is profound humanistic care to comfort the helplessness and anxiety of children and their families. Dr. Zhu interpreted the connotation of "paying attention to the health of key populations" in the "Healthy China 2030" Planning Outline through real cases of treating critically ill children, and encouraged the students present: "Pediatric medicine is a career that guards the starting point of life. Every persistence can light up hope."

The second half was an interactive practice session. Dr. Zhu Yuenniu led the students in a hands-on training of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques. Through an immersive teaching approach of "theoretical explanation - demonstration - group practice", she helped the students understand the golden rescue skills in a simulated emergency scenario.

The atmosphere at the event was intense. The students took detailed notes and recorded the key points of the techniques, brimming with eagerness to explore the unknowns of medicine. One of the high school students who participated in the practice remarked, "This was not just a technical learning session; it also made me realize the responsibility and commitment doctors have in critical moments."

Medical education is a "dialogue between life and life", and the cultivation of pediatric talents requires sowing the seeds from the teenage years. This event is not only an enlightenment of medical knowledge but also a baptism of professional values. Pediatricians are the "gatekeepers" of children's health and a key force in implementing the goal of "full life cycle health services" in the "Healthy China 2030 Plan Outline". In the future, the School of Pediatrics will continue to carry out the "Amazing Pediatricians" series of activities, continuously deepening the resonance with national strategies, and using innovative curriculum systems and social practices as carriers to transform medical knowledge into vivid learning experiences, guiding more young talents to establish professional ideals in the exploration of life's mysteries, and empowering the cultivation of "clinically competent, scientifically skilled, and compassionate" pediatricians of the new era.
