Enhance humanistic care and tide over the epidemic together ——The Activity of Pediatrics Class’s Tutors Held Successfully

In order to actively implement the latest instructions of Shanghai Municipal Health Commission, Shanghai Municipal Education Commission and Jiao Tong University School of Medicine on the prevention and control of the COVID-19, and to further protect the work, study and normal life of all teachers and students in the Academy of Pediatrics, the Academy of Pediatrics organized an online work tutor activity for all undergraduate students at 7:00 pm on March 18. The event was organized and hosted by Cao Qing, the class mentor of the Class 20 Pediatrics II, the director of the Infection Department and the director of the Pediatrics Department of Shanghai Children’s Medical Center, who invited several outstanding clinicians and students from the Pediatrics Center to participate in the sharing. Zhang Hao, Vice President of the Academy of Pediatrics and Dean of Shanghai Children’s Medical Center, Chen Yiqi, Vice President of the Academy of Pediatrics, Lin Qian, Director of the Office, Zhang Dandan, Head of Student General Affairs, some class instructors of the Academy of Pediatrics, some counselors of the affiliated hospitals and the head of student work attended the event.

The event was closely related to the thought dynamics of the faculty and students during the epidemic prevention and control period, and actively introduced the topic of medical humanistic care to help the faculty and students enhance their confidence in fighting the epidemic and stabilize their anxiety. Zhang Hao, vice president of the College of Pediatrics and president of Shanghai Children's Medical Center, firstly shared his experience on How to be an excellent pediatrician. Through reviewing his growth experience and career, he encouraged students to be brave enough to step out of the comfort zone, read more and observe more people, actively improve themselves and strive to move forward with the times. He said: at present, it is an important period of epidemic prevention and control, and all students and teachers should adjust their mindset, sort out their emotions, and put themselves into work and study with a positive mental outlook. At the same time, pay attention to personal protection and help the epidemic prevention and control work with teachers and students together to tide over the difficulties.

Then, Liu Tingliang, deputy director of the Department of Cardiology of Shanghai Children’s Medical Center, briefly introduced how to carry out Medical Humanistic Care under the Epidemic. He said that the change of the epidemic and the regional closed-loop management brought a great test to the psychological activities and emotional regulation of general residents, patients, family members, medical care, and timely and effective medical humanistic care plays an important role in the prevention and control of the epidemic. Under the epidemic, it is more necessary to highlight the spirit of caring, self-improvement and never giving up; humanistic service is good, and the beauty and nobility of medicine can be more reflected under the epidemic. He encouraged the students to always keep in mind their faith and mission as medical practitioners, and to better combine humanistic feelings with medical literacy when participating in epidemic prevention and control and pediatric clinical work, so as to be a pediatrician with soul and temperature.

Finally, Dr. Shen Nan from the Department of Infection of Shanghai Children’s Medical Center shared her thoughts on scientific research innovation-What We Can Do for Medical Innovation, introducing the valuable experience of scientific research study for students, she said: medical innovation needs to look up to the stars and have a down-to-earth attitude, hoping that students can open their minds, be brave to innovate, and strive to become outstanding medical innovators with international vision!

The event received critical acclaim of the students and teachers, and the students said: as medical students, faced with the epidemic, it is more important to keep optimistic, actively help the epidemic prevention work, and contribute to the protection of themselves and their families.

At the same time, to further improve the emotional management and care for teachers and students during the epidemic, the Academy of Pediatrics actively conducted psychological guidance and career guidance for teachers and students through online special courses on medical humanistic communication and scientific management of emotions. The courses include Medical Humanities Education of Pediatric-Service Learning (presenter: Ji Qingying, Secretary of the Party Committee of Shanghai Children’s Medical Center) and Fundamentals of Pediatric Medical Simulation (presenter: Chen Yiqi, full-time Vice President of the Academy of Pediatrics). Course topics included: Humanistic Care for Children with Special Needs (Guest: Chen Jingzhi, Clinical Social Worker of Pediatric Center), Seminar on the Exchange of Classic Cases of Pediatric Medical Ethics (Guest: Ren Yijiong, Ethics Office of Pediatric Center), and Principles and Methods of Psychosocial Care for Children (Zhang Kan, Clinical Social Worker of Pediatric Center).
