上海市内分泌代谢病研究所已形成以转化型医学为理念的内分泌代谢病系统生物学研究体系，在凝练为遗传性内分泌代谢病临床诊治以及慢性非传染性代谢病发病机制、流行病学研究两大方向的同时，重点建设内分泌代谢病临床诊治、预防、预警和研发体系。该体系进一步依托专业化的临床研究公共服务平台和协同研究网络，致力于开展大规模、前瞻性、多中心、高质量的临床诊疗规范研究。本研究所已形成一支梯队层次合理，团结奋进，朝气蓬勃，极富创新能力的团队，形成了较强的学科、基地、团队等综合优势，承担了一批国家级科研项目，获得了一批科研成果，培养了一批高水平人才，集聚了一批优秀的中青年学者。为国家临床医学研究中心、国家卫健委重点实验室、国家重点学科、国家临床重点专科、上海市重点实验室等学科基地，承办两本学术期刊，《中华内分泌代谢杂志》为受中华医学会的委托承办的国内学术影响力最高的内分泌代谢学术期刊，《Journal of Diabetes》为国内唯一被SCI收录的内分泌代谢病学术期刊，临床内分泌实验室为国内唯一通过美国病理家协会（CAP）认证的内分泌专业实验室。
所长和学科带头人为宁光，中国工程院院士，973首席科学家，长江学者特聘教授，上海交通大学医学院附属瑞金医院院长，学术任职《中华内分泌代谢杂志》总编辑和《Journal of Diabetes》主编，长期从事内分泌代谢病临床与科研工作，在遗传性内分泌疾病、肾上腺疾病与糖尿病临床诊治取得丰硕成果，四次获得国家科技进步二等奖。
为响应国家“健康中国”战略规划，本研究所将加强医学科技创新体系建设，努力将自身打造为临床医学和转化研究的高地，在运行机制、思维方式及观念、临床诊疗技术和科研思路和方法等方面按照国际通行的运作方式运作，成为一开放的、创新的、充满活力的研究所，从而能把握国际内分泌学的发展潮流，建立自身的特色，成为具有自身特点的可参与国际竞争的临床医学科研机构。

Shanghai Institute of endocrine and metabolic diseases has formed a research system of systemic biology of endocrine and metabolic diseases based on the concept of translational medicine. The Chinese Journal of Endocrinology and metabolism is the domestic academic journal of Endocrinology and metabolism with the highest academic influence entrusted by the Chinese Medical Association, It is the only laboratory of endocrinology in China that has been certified by the Journal of Endocrinology and pathology of the United States.
The director and discipline leader is Ning Guang, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 973 chief scientist, distinguished professor of Changjiang Scholars, President of Ruijin Hospital Affiliated to the Medical School of Shanghai Jiaotong University, academically serving as the chief editor of the Chinese Journal of Endocrinology and metabolism and the chief editor of the Journal of Diabetes. He has been engaged in clinical and scientific research of endocrine and metabolic diseases for a long time The clinical diagnosis and treatment of adrenal diseases and diabetes have yielded fruitful results, and four times the two prize of national scientific and technological progress.
