To further promote the internationalization of medical education,
on June 15th 2017, Ottawa-Shanghai Joint School of Medicine (OSJSM) held a
meeting on the internationalization of medical education. The
attendees include: Dr. SHAO Li, Director of Shanghai Jiao Tong
University School of Medicine (SJTUSM) Academic Affairs Office and
OSJSM Executive Dean, Dr. MEI Wenhan, OSJSM Assistant Dean, Dr. GUO
Xiaokui, OSJSM Assistant Dean, Dr. ZHENG Qing, OSJSM Assistant
Dean. OSJSM SIM Center Director, Evaluation Director, Unit Leaders,
Rotation Directors and Student Counselors also attended the
meeting. Dr. SHAO Li hosted the meeting around the following three topics:
1. Summary of OSJSM achievements, difficulties and future
improvements; 2. The challenges and opportunities for OSJSM with
international accreditation and Canadian accreditation of medical
schools; 3. Development of the e-learning platform and online
evaluation and assessment platform that match with OSJSM’s needs. The participants had a heated discussion on the above topics. Dr.
NI Xingzhi from the Surgery Department said that the shadowing
program for teachers is very productive. The shadowing professors
can learn about the differences between Canada and China in medical
education. Dr. ZHENG Qing, made a brief report on the preparation
for clinical rotations. We should learn from the emphasis on the
details and the policies of the western medical education. Dr. GUO
Xiaokui and Dr. Mei Wenhan pointed out that the sino-foreign
medical education cooperation brings higher requirements to both
the teachers and students. It focuses on more on self-study and
self-management. Both the students and teachers need to adapt to
the new curriculum and solve the difficulties together through more
communication. Dr. CHEN Guangjie, Foundation Unit Leader, said that FU is the most
complicated unit. The students are under a lot of pressure. More
support and guidance are needed from the Student Affairs Office.
Ms. WANG Suping, Student Counselor briefly introduced the current
student support activities, including the peer program, tutoring,
classmate support, etc. She said these activities are well accepted
by the students and more activities will be organized in the
future. Dr. QIAO Yuqi, Evaluation Director made a brief summary and
analysis of the current evaluation model. Exam paper analysis is a
great improvement and is conducive to optimizing the question bank.
However, competency-based evaluation still needs improvement. And
more thoughts should be put on the evaluation of professionalism. Dr. MENG Chao, Family Medicine Director pointed out that the family
medicine content in the OSJSM curriculum is in adherence with the
great efforts the government recently put in family medicine.
However, due to the differences in the overall health environment
and health systems, it needs to be further explored how to deliver
the family medicine content. Dr. XU Yong, Psychiatry professor,
said that psychiatry has a bigger proportion in the OSJSM
curriculum than traditional curriculum. And case-based learning is
employed. This is a challenge to the teachers as to how to achieve
the expected teaching effect. The meeting lasted about 2 hours. The participants brought up many
constructive suggestions. At the end, Dr. SHAO Li expressed her
gratitude to the participants. The suggestions will be summarized
to provide further guidance on the medical education reform of
OSJSM.
