Cultural Activities in and around Adelaide

Adelaide is the perfect place to enjoy a rewarding study experience in a relaxed, beautiful environment.

Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia, is a compact multicultural hub with a one-million-strong population made up of over 100 different ethnic communities, many proudly maintaining links with their homeland culture. Adelaide combines interest, creativity and liveliness with a safe and clean environment. South Australians lead a relaxed but stimulating lifestyle in a state rich in history, and a particular love of fine wine and food.

The natural beauty of South Australia encompasses a diverse range of different landscapes from the rugged Flinders Ranges to the sweeping coastlines of the Fleurieu Peninsula to the enchanting Adelaide Hills surrounding the city.

Adelaide enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with warm, dry summers and cool, mild winters.

Tourist Activities in and around Adelaide include:

The Migration Museum
Nationally and internationally renowned for its innovative exhibition techniques designed to tell the story of the countless thousands of people who left everyone and everything they knew to start life again in Australia.

Art Gallery of South Australia

The collection is one of the finest in Australia and the Gallery itself is a glorious heritage building inside and out.

South Australian Museum

Visit the renowned INGARNENDI Aboriginal Cultures Gallery or take in an exhibition.

State Library of South Australia
The State Library contains a diverse catalogue and incredible array of collections for public viewing.

The Adelaide Central Market

Buzzing with sounds, colours and wonderous smells, the Adelaide Central Market is truly the destination for foodies.

Festivals & Events

Festivals and events occur with remarkable frequency in the city of Adelaide. These range from the traditional to the offbeat, and from international arts festivals to major sporting events. Major ongoing festivals and events include: The Adelaide Festival of Arts, Womadelaide, the Clipsal 500, Jacobs Creek Tour Down Under, The Festival of ideas and much more.

National Parks and Conservation Areas
The Australian government sets aside areas to protect and maintain the native Australian bush and wildlife. Cleland Conservation Park provides an excellent opportunity to see koalas, kangaroos, wallabies and other native animals in their natural surroundings. Other parks such as those at Belair, Parra Wirra and Morialta are great for bushwalking and picnicking. Most of these parks can be reached by public transport.

Kangaroo Island
Located just 16km from the tip of the Fleurieu Peninsula, Kangaroo Island is the third largest island off the Australian mainland, accessible by vehicle/passenger ferry and by air. It offers an abundance of wildlife largely unaffected by developments on the mainland, including sea lions, koalas, wallabies and of course kangaroos! It is also home to Australia's largest sea lion colony, spectacular rock formations, and untouched sandy beaches.

Wine Regions

South Australia is home to Australia’s leading Wine growing regions including the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Adelaide Hills and Clare Valley. All destinations are between one and three hours drive from Adelaide.

Flinders Ranges
The Flinders Ranges national park, a mountain range about five hours north of the state, covers 95,000 hectares. It incorporates rugged scenery, seasonal wildflowers, tree-lined gorges and wildlife. Wilpena Pound, in the heart of the national park, offers excellent camping and bushwalking, abundant wildlife, and dense native vegetation.

The Beaches of Fleurieu Peninsula
The Fleurieu Peninsula is home to some of South Australia's most picturesque swimming and fishing beaches, walking trails, and wine regions. The seaside region of Victor Harbour offers many different opportunities: surfing, fishing and swimming at its different beaches, whale-watching and the chance to see more than 1000 fairy penguins, nesting on Granite Island.

Sports and Outdoor Pursuits

Outdoor recreation and sport plays an important role in the daily life of Australians and the facilities, programs and events available to international visitors are in abundance. You can play golf on lush fairways within one kilometre of the city, hike from the Southern Ocean to the ancient landscape of the Flinders Ranges on the Heysen Trail, paddle a canoe through the wild backwaters of the Murray River, sailboard at Glenelg or attend a game of Aussie Rules Football at AAMI Stadium.

Restuarants & Eating Out
Adelaide has more restaurants per person than any other city in Australia and you'll find an extremely varied selection of cuisines, price range, and styles. You'll find a great mix of restaurant strips dotted across the city including: Rundle Street East for alfresco dining; The Parade at Norwood for great Italian food and Gouger Street for seafood and Asian fare.

Beautiful Architecture

In Adelaide, offices are just as likely to be housed in gracious Victorian or Edwardian structures as in modern towers, and colonial-era homes are lovingly preserved, their verandas and Adelaide lace ironwork intact.
