Professor Richard A. Flavell from Yale University School of Medicine came to visit our school

On the morning of December 12, Richard A. Flavell, the winner of the UK Royal Institute of Medicine, the National Academies of Sciences of the United States, the Academy of Medical Sciences of the United States, and also the founder and director of the Department of Immunology at the Yale University School of Medicine, was invited to School of Medicine of Shanghai Jiao Tong University(SJTU-SM) and made a report for 21th Century Innovation Forum titledInflammation, Microbiota and Human Health. Professor Chen Guoqiang, dean of the School of Medicine, expressed a warm welcome to Prof. Flavell, while Prof. Su Bing, director of the Department of Immunology and Microbiology, Shanghai Institute of Immunology, Shanghai Institute for Immunology, presided over the forum. Over four hundred teachers, students and researchers from the School of Medicine, clinical hospitals and other units attended the seminar, leaving the lecture hall no seats.

Professor Flavell is one of the most well-known and highly cited immunologists in the world, who so far has published 1090 articles with an H-index of 219 and an article quotation times of 179833, teaching alarge number of professors including six academicians of various countries. Professor Flavell, a founding member of the Department of Immunology at the Yale School of Medicine, has made a number of contributions to the field of molecular biology and immunology with a number of original contributions, including the creation of the most advanced humanized mouse model available today and continues to improve and find new features of many inflammasomes and the physiological functions of regulatory RNA in the immune system. In a half-hour seminar, Prof. Flavell, who was over seventy years ago, stood still and gave a detailed and vivid demonstration of his fruitful achievements in scientific research in the past 10 years, showing the professionalism and demeanor of one academician of three institutes. The atmosphere of communication and interaction was warm. Teachers and students not only asked questions in immunology, but also asked professors how to tackle difficult problems in scientific research and how to plan for scientific research. Prof. Flavell listened attentively and answered them one by one. He put forward scientific and guiding suggestions and placed great hopes on the younger generation. He hoped that they would soon become elites in the medical field and work hard for the development of human health.

Professor Flavell highly praised the work of SJTU-SM in recent years and expressed his willingness to establish his second laboratory in School of Medicine. Chen Guoqiang said the college would fully support Professor Flavell‘s work in School of Medicine, through its enormous international influence, promoting the construction of “Shanghai JiaoTong University School of Medicine - Yale University School of Medicine Immunology and Metabolism Research Center”, making it a close cooperation between Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and Yale University School of Medicine to promote the construction of first-level medical school.
