Han Bohui’s team, from the affiliated Chest Hospital, found a new mechanism of pathogenesis of lung cancer

Recently, Annals of Oncology, the official journal of the European Society of Clinical Oncology(ESMO), published in Volume 28 of 2017 an article titled Genetic variations in cancer-related Significant Mutations in Genes and Lung Cancer Susceptibility (IF: 11.855), new results from Han Baohui‘s team, associate dean of Chest Hospital, in collaboration with Professor Wu Xifeng from MD Anderson Cancer Center in the United States. Professor Han Baohui and Professor Wu Xifeng are co-authors of the article, while Zhang Yanweifrom Department of Respiratory Internal Medicineof Chest Hospital is the first co-author of this article, providing a new idea for the accurate prediction of the risk of lung cancer and its mechanism.

Han Baohui’s research team has long maintained close cooperation with top international medical institutions including the MD Anderson Cancer Center in the United States, Yale University and the University of Pittsburgh in the research of molecular epidemiology of lung tumors and immunotherapy. From 2013 to 2015, he sent team members to the Department of Epidemiology at MD Anderson Cancer Center in the United States for communication and cooperation with Professor Wu Xifeng. During the stay there, under the joint guidance of Professor Wu Xifeng and Professor Han Baohui, the team screened out 1655 mutation sites of 127 genes in 12 different types of tumors through the TCGA database.They detectedmutation sitesin the peripheral blood in 1656 patients with lung cancer and 1486 patients as healthy controls,and 11 mutations of the 8 genes were found to be significantly associated with the incidence of lung cancer. Follow-up bioinformatics analysis indicated that inflammation-related signaling pathways might play an important role in the pathogenesis of lung cancer.

In the era of precision medical treatment, the research results provide new bases and ideas for the accurate prediction of the risk of lung cancer and the mechanism of the pathogenesis of lung cancer, which is also laid a foundation for further cooperation between Chest Hospital and MD Anderson Cancer Center in molecular epidemiology of lung cancer.
