Ruijin Hospital

Established in 1907,Ruijing Hospitalwas originally called Guangci Hospital. It is a general teachinghospital under the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School ofMedicine  with a land area of 0.12 million square meters, aconstruction area of over 0.15 million square meters and alandscaped area covering nearly 30% of the total area. At presentthere are 1774 beds and a staff of over 3300 persons, among whom507 hold senior titles. The hospital is staffed with a large numberof medical experts who are well reputed,including Chen Zhu, memberof Chinese Academy of Sciences and currently the Minister of Healthof the state, Wang Zhengyi and Chen Saijuan, both members ofChinese Academy of Engineering, and others. The hospital has 34clinical departments, 7 departments of medical technology; 9institutes (endocrionology, hematology, traumatology andorthopedics, burns, hypertension, digestive surgery, neurology,cardiovascular diseases, infectious diseases and respiratorydisease); 11 laboratories, among which one is a State keylaboratory (Key Laboratory of Medical Genome), 2 key laboratoriesof the Ministry of Public Health (Key Laboratory of Endocrine andMetabolic Diseases of Ministry of Public Health and Key Laboratoryof Human Genome of Ministry of Public Health); 3 clinical medicalcenters (Shanghai Micro-Traumatic Surgery Clinical Medical Center,Shanghai Endocrine and Metabolic Diseases Clinical Medical Centerand Shanghai Hematology Clinical Medical Center); 8 state bases forclinical research of drugs; 3 key disciplines of State Ministry ofEducation, 6 key disciplines of Shanghai Education Commission and 3leading disciplines of medicine of Shanghai Municipality.


Since successfully rescuing QiuCaikang, a steel worker who was almost fatally burned in the 1950s,Ruijin Hospital has always kept its status as the world leader inthe field of extensive burns treatment. In the 1970s, it took thelead at home in carrying out heart and liver transplantations andin the 1990s made tremendous progress in the research of leukemiamolecular biology and its clinical practice. In the newcentury,mature techniques in organ transplantations with almostperfect results have made many patients regard this hospital as arevitalizing oasis of life. As a result, the hospital has won thehonorable titles of the Advanced Collective of the National HealthSystem (for 6 times), 100 Good Hospitals Nationwide, the NationalAdvanced Collective in the Pursuit of Socialist Civility, NationalModel of Advanced Ideological and Political Work of the HealthSystem; Civilized Unit of Shanghai Municipality (for 9 times)andmany others.


Ruijin Hospital regards itsachievements and honor as a motivating force. In order to furthermeet the market requirements, the hospital has been activelydeveloping high-grade, refined and advanced therapeutictechnologies such as microtraumatic operations, arthroscopicoperations, cardiovascular intervening therapy, ophthalmologicquasi-molecular laser operations and so on. It has implementedmultidisciplinary or cross-disciplinary consultation systems bymaking full use of the comprehensive therapeutic advantages of theHospital so as to increasingly raise its therapeutic level andquality of service. In the meantime, the hospital has aimed for thetarget of becoming a research-orientated hospital,providing bettermedical care for the public on the basis of extensive clinicalpractice and intensified scientific research. The 9 researchinstitutes at the municipal level and the State Key Laboratoriesand Disciplines are working vigorously in the fields of urology,digestive diseases, endocrinology, hypertension, trauma managementthrough traditional Chinese medicine, acute necrotic pancriatitisand reproductive health,etc. At the same time, the hospitalcontinues to encourage and cultivate a humanistic approach, pushingthe “Heart-warming Program” which emphasizes “easing the patients’worry with meticulous care, satisfying the patients' needs withfirst-class service and raising the patients' spirits with gracefulenvironment”, with a view to winning the trust of the patients andthe society at large.

Ruijin Hospital is the largest clinicalteaching base of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School ofMedicine. Ruijin College of Clinical Medicine offers clinicaltraining for students in the programs of clinical medicine, medicallaboratory science, and senior nursing, and runs a Senior NursingTraining Center. Each year it undertakes the teaching work for over1000 medical students at undergraduate and graduate levels and hasbecome the cradle for training talents for medical circles.

In recent years Ruijin Hospital has wonover 300 scientific research projects of all kinds, including majorprojects of State Natural Science Foundation, key projects fromState Science and Technology Commission,including 863 Project and973 Project, State “8th 5-Year Plan” Project for Tackling KeyProblems and “9th 5-Year Plan” Project for Tackling Key Problems,scientific research projects of the Ministry of Public Health,State Education Commission Projects for Overseas Students,scientific research projects at the municipal level and other majorprojects. The hospital now has 29 stations for master students, 21stations for Ph.D. students, 12 mobile stations for post-doctoraltraining, supervised by 150 master tutors and 59 Ph.D. tutors. Thescientific and technical talents of the hospital receive extensivefinancial support from diverse sources, including Fund for StateOutstanding Talents, Training Fund of State Education Commissionfor Cross-century Talents, Shanghai Venus Plan, Shanghai PostvenusPlan, Shanghai Dawn Plan and Plan for 100 Cross-century ExcellentLeaders of Disciplines of the Health System of Shanghai. TheHospital has also won a series of prestigious international prizessuch as Evens Prize of the U.S. Burns Association, ViktInternational Burns Prize of Italy, Cathrine Prize of Cancer of theU.S., Brubah Prize of Cancer of Switzerland, Prix de l’Oise from LaLeague Nationale Contre Cancer (France) and Prix de Simone &Cino del Duca (France), He Liang He Li Fund Technology Prize ofHong Kong and others. In order to quicken the pace to introduceadvanced technology and equipment, Ruijin Hospital has activelycarried out international exchanges and cooperation, and has formedextensive ties with institutions from such countries as France, theU.S., Britain, Canada, Belgium, Japan, Australia and such regionsand organizations as Hong Kong, Taiwan and the World HealthOrganization,which have led to many cooperative programs inscientific research.


On August 4, 1999, in order toimplement our country's new policy of reform in health care andhospital management under the new conditions market and realize theaim of “providing better services with relatively low costs”,Ruijin Hospital took the lead in reorganizing itself andestablished the Shanghai Ruijin Hospital Group. Using resources andassets from different areas, industries, and institutions atvarious levels,the hospital has successfully formed a regionalmedical health center with itself at the core. For four years,Ruijin Hospital and the Group members  Luwan Branch, MinhangHospital and Taizhou Central Hospital have all achieved good socialeffects and significant economic returns.


On October 25, 2002 Ruijin Hospitalagain took a solid step in its effort to explore new ways ofpromoting scientific research work. By creatively establishing athome the “Institute of Biologic Medicine”, the hospital initiated anew pattern of large-scale scientific research, with innovativesystems in program selection, personnel recruitment,and evaluationof research results,etc. This research institute relies on theresearch capacity of Ruijin Hospital as the main force, and takesadvantage of the combined strengths of such renowned institutionsas Shanghai Life Science Institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences,Health Science Center of Former Shanghai Second Medical Universityand State South Center of Human Genome. It is the first researchand development institution which has a hospital as the mainstayand integrates life science with clinical medicine. It follows theprinciple of "having only the most suitable professionals workingin a program instead of having the fixed personnel”, thus ensuringthe normal flow of professionals, the positioning of the properpersons at the proper places and the chance for everyone to have astage on which to show their talent.
