Biomedical Science (four-year)

The program falls within national-level first-class undergraduate program construction site, training Program 2.0 for top students in basic disciplines and Plan for strengthening basic disciplines approved by the Ministry of Education. SJTUSM and Zhiyuan College join hands to provide students with at least one opportunity for overseas study tour to expand internationalized vision. The “One-to-one tutorial system” is implemented for the program, with a four-year undergraduate length of schooling, and four-year or five-year doctor length of schooling. Graduates with outstanding academic performance can enter “Zhiyuan Honor Plan” of doctors for further study.

The program is aimed at cultivating the talents in the fields of medicine research and education who have profound Physics and Chemistry Foundation and knowledge about modern bioscience, digest medicine knowledge, are full of lofty ideal, noble sentiment, innovation thinking and global vision. Distinctive courses include the core courses for the program include Introduction to Biomedical Science, biochemistry, cytology, genetics, body structure and function, lemology foundation, Introduction to Clinical Medicine, Introduction to Biomedicine Science Literature and so on. Also, a series of experimental courses, RBL scientific research training and graduation design and other scientific research practice are designed to realize leap-type improvement in innovation ability. Graduates can enter senior medicine colleges and universities, top hospitals, scientific research institutes and biomedicine companies to engage in scientific research and teaching work.


Clinical Medicine (eight-year)

The program is China’s double first-class discipline and falls within the plan of training remarkable doctors by the Ministry of Education (MoE). In the MoE Ranking among Colleges and Universities in terms of Degree and Discipline Evaluation 2017, the program ranks A+. The program is designed to cultivate remarkable medical innovation talents. The qualified eight-year system graduates of clinical medicine are awarded the degree of M.D.

SJTUSM implements an eight-year schooling for students of this program. At the end of the 5th school year, an examination will be taken to decide students’ future study. Those qualified can continue with their study of latter three years.


Clinical Medicine (eight-year French class)

The program is China’s double first-class discipline and falls within the plan of training remarkable doctors by the Ministry of Education (MoE). In the MoE Ranking among Colleges and Universities in terms of Degree and Discipline Evaluation 2017, the program ranks A+.

It is one of the key Sino-French cooperation programs to strengthen communication between the two governments, and embodies the long-lasting high-level cooperation between SJTUSM and French medical schools. According to cooperation agreement, Clinical Medicine (French class) enrolls students throughout the whole country, including those who have zero French language skills. French will be the first foreign language during their study at SJTUSM, and in summer of the first school year all students accept immersive language training in France for 3 months. French professors will come to SJTUSM to deliver part of the teaching, and Ruijin Hospital is responsible for the clinical teaching. The featured RBL training (the first-stage scientific research of life science) in the French class makes students obtain comprehensive, systematic, and international basic scientific research training in additional to quality clinical teaching. After completing stipulated study, students who pass examination will be qualified to go to France to accept “Foreign Resident Doctor training” or “the second-stage scientific research of life science”. French class teaching over the years has achieved remarkable results and obtained good social reputation. Students who studied in France were highly praised by French schools and became business backbones of medicine, teaching and research after getting back to China.


Clinical Medicine (eight-year stomatology)

The program is China’s double first-class discipline and falls within the plan of training remarkable doctors by the Ministry of Education (MoE).

The program was set in 1932. Clinical stomatology is a national-level key discipline, and basic medical sciences of stomatology is a national-level key (cultivation) discipline and the key discipline of Shanghai. The program offers research platforms like National Stomatological Center, National Clinical Research Center for Oral Diseases, Shanghai Key Laboratory of Stomatology, Regenerative Medicine Innovative Cell of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Innovation Research Group of National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). It is the only stomatology discipline in China with 2 academicians (Qiu Weiliu and Zhang Zhiyuan) faculty from the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE). With nearly 30 overseas sister schools, SJTUSM carries out extensive exchanges and most graduates take further study in overseas famous schools for degrees.

Eight-year cultivation in the stomatology provides high quality platform for students’ occupational development. Qualified graduates will be awarded doctoral degree of stomatology and can be engaged in teaching and research of stomatology in affiliated hospitals of SJTUSM and teaching hospitals.

Clinical Medicine (five-year English class)

Five-year Clinical Medicine (English class) is an undergraduate program jointly run by Shanghai Jiao Tong University and University of Ottawa. Aiming at cultivating remarkable medical innovation talents with international vision, SJTUSM collaborates with University of Ottawa to deliver medical core courses in English. Students with outstanding academic performance have chance to study abroad or take internship for a certain period. After finishing five-year study, students can be recommended to pursue a doctor’s degree without participating in examination if the requirement is met.


Food Safety and Nutrition (four-year)

As the first university in China to set four-year system of nutrition undergraduate program, SJTUSM has more than 30 years of history of nutriology education. Nutriology is the key medicine discipline in Shanghai, the key discipline of public health in Shanghai, and the pilot program of application-oriented university approved by Shanghai Municipal Commission of Education. Nutriology department is equipped with first-class clinical nutrition faculty in China and promotes the development of China’s evaluation system of registered dietitians. The program also offers master and doctoral degrees, “2+2” joint training project with Cornell University for implementation, and dual bachelor’s degree program of Food Safety and Nutrition & Administrative Management co-built with School of International and Public Affairs.

The program is aimed at cultivating innovative and remarkable talents in the profession of nutrition with basic knowledge and skills about medicine, nutrition and food safety. Graduates will be familiar with nutritional diagnosis and diet nutrition guidance for diseases, with international vision and multiple-discipline background. Distinctive courses include anatomy, lemology foundation, clinical medicine outline, Traditional Chinese Medicine, preventive healthcare, nutriology foundation, public nutriology, group nutriology, clinical nutriology, foods nutriology, food safety, food technology, food analysis and inspection, nutrition consultation and education, diet design and management and so on.

Graduates have high comments from employers including nutritional department in hospitals, disease control center, food safety supervision and management authorities, companies or nutrition research institutions. Excellent graduates can obtain graduate degree directly or go abroad for study via recommendation without participating in examination.


Hearing and Speech Rehabilitation (four-year)

The program includes audiology, speech-linguistic science and relevant rehabilitation medicine fields and is a new-emerging discipline that integrates medicine, science, industry, and social science. Among them, audiology is a science to research people’s auditory function, diagnosis and rehabilitation of dysfunction, auditory damage and safety protection. In the current stage, the audiology in our country mainly focuses on the prevention and healthcare, diagnosis and treatment and intervention and rehabilitation of hearing and also involves linguistic and psychological issues arising from hearing disorder. The hearing discipline team of SJTUSM enjoys a high reputation at home and abroad and is devoted to leading China’s development of audiology.

The program aims to cultivate professionals who can be competent for medical technology work, with R&D ability and global vision, rigorous and realistic scientific spirit and critical thinking. Distinctive courses include anatomy, lemology foundation, preventive healthcare, health statistics, laboratory animal science, audiology foundation, otorhinolaryngologic diseases outline, diagnostic audiology, hearing-aid and auxiliary equipment, Artificial hearing technology, child audiology, rehabilitation audiology, macroaudiology, vestibular medicine, speech science foundation and speech-linguistic rehabilitation.

Graduates are engaged in hearing inspection, diagnosis, invention and rehabilitation of hearing and speech as well as hearing health management work in major comprehensive hospitals or medical institutions. Some of the graduates will be devoted to teaching, scientific research, application research and development and clinical promotion and other development work in colleges and universities, scientific research institutes, and hearing equipment and hearing-aid device enterprises. Excellent students can pursue graduate degree at SJTUSM without participating in examination or go abroad for study.


Medical Imaging Technology (four-year)

The program is an emerging medicine technology discipline extremely full of clinical abilities and discipline intersection, and involves professional knowledge about basic medical sciences, clinical medicine, physics, computer science and other multiple disciplines. In the program, “elite-type and small class” teaching is adopted, relying on the powerful strength of clinical medicine discipline in science, engineering course and School of Medicine of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. SJTUSM also introduces a intersected training mode of trans-colleges, cross-disciplines, and coalition of college and enterprise, distinctive course groups of intersection of medicine and industry and clinical practice bases to strengthen the innovation awareness and theory transformation abilities. The teaching system includes the whole process from undergraduate, master, doctor to continuing medical education.

Guided by the needs of the industrial upgrading of modern medical imaging technology and the clinical transformation and application of new technologies for "innovative, R & D, and compound medical talents", the program aims to cultivate remarkable medical imaging technical talents with profound humanistic background, solid professional knowledge, skilled clinical skills, strong innovative consciousness, and broad international vision.

Distinctive courses include anatomy, lemology foundation, clinical medicine outline, preventive healthcare, sectional anatomy, medical imaging anatomy, principals of medical imaging, medical imaging equipment, medical imaging technique, medical imageology, medical imaging process, radio physics and radiation protection. Graduates are mainly engaged in clinical operation of imaging technology, application research and development, teaching and scientific research work and so on in national-level medical center, production organizations of medical equipment, colleges and universities.


Medical Laboratory Technology (four-year)

SJTUSM is one of the first batch of medical colleges and universities in China which established the program of undergraduate medical laboratory technology. In 1986, SJTUSM was approved to become the one of the firsts to award masters’ degree in Clinical Laboratory Diagnostics, and in 1998, SJTUSM was authorized to grant doctor’s degree in Clinical Diagnostics. SJTUSM provides a distinctive mode of university-enterprise collaboration, with professional education and students’ career running through the whole teaching process. Distinctive courses include anatomy, lemology foundation, preventive healthcare, health statistics, laboratory animal science, inspection technique for clinical immunology, inspection technique for clinical foundation, inspection technique for clinical microbiology, clinical hematology and inspection technique for hematology, clinical biochemistry and inspection technique for biochemistry, molecular biology foundation and technology, clinical transfusion science and inspection technique for transfusion science, laboratory management, technologies and applications for inspection instrument analysis, clinical medicine outline and so on.

Graduates can enter clinical laboratory of medical institutions at all levels to engage in medical inspection, the laboratories in institutions of higher learning and scientific research institutions to engage in experimental technology work, medical devices and reagent-related companies to engage in technology support work, or continue to study for a graduate degree (qualified students can pursue the master’s degree of SJTUSM without participating in examination) or go abroad for study.


Medical Laboratory Technology (“4+1” French class)

The program adopts “4+1” successive undergraduate and graduate study, and is one of the key cooperation projects between the governments of China and France to strengthen their communication. The program is aimed to cultivate a batch of innovative and compound talents in medical examination with solid medical foundation, a wide range of knowledge, good medical examination skills, and certain scientific research abilities as well as international vision and competitiveness.

Students take French as the first foreign language, and part of the courses are taught in both Chinese and French. In the summer of the first year, all the students go to France to accept three-month language training. During the third and fourth year, students will take coursed taught by academicians from the first-class universities and scientific research institutions in France and complete their Master 1 study. Students will obtain Master 1 certificate issued by French partners after passing theory test, scientific research training and thesis defense. At the end of the seventh semester, students who passed the exams can keep their study for Master 2 master-stage in France. After passing examination and defense of China and France in various stages, students will obtain undergraduate graduation certificate, Bachelor's Degree of Science issued by Shanghai Jiao Tong University and scientific research master’s degree certificate issued by French university. The program expands cultivation channel of compound talents in medical examination/scientific research, and lays a solid foundation for students who wish to pursue a Ph.D. degree.


Nursing (four-year)

The program falls within the list of national-level first-class undergraduate program. In the Ranking among Colleges and Universities in terms of Degree and Discipline Evaluation promulgated by education department in 2017, the program ranks B+. The program offers a dual-degree project of “Nursing-Administrative Management”.

The program aims to cultivate professional talents who both comply with the needs of “healthy China strategy” and own international adaptability. Relying on first-class education resource of SJTUSM and abundant medical education resources of the 12 affiliated hospitals, the advantageous education achievements such as national-level online excellent courses and hybrid teaching mode were obtained and the complete cultivation system of bachelor, master and doctor is equipped. Distinctive courses include nursing ethics, nursing psychology, nursing education, nursing research, nursing administration, anatomy, lemology foundation, preventive healthcare, introduction to nursing, basic nursing, health assessment, adult nursing, paediatric nursing, maternal and infant nursing, mental health and mental nursing as well as community care.


Pediatrics (“5+3” schooling)

International teaching mode is adopted for the program. SJTUSM fully highlights the Pediatrics features based on the comprehensive quality education. SJTUSM has first-class Pediatrics teaching faculty and platform. Xinhua Hospital, Shanghai Children's Medical Center, and Children's Hospital of Shanghai are the teaching hospitals with complete discipline categories, abundant clinical teaching resources and specialized characteristics that integrate medicine, teaching and research.

Pediatrics is a key program of SJTUSM. It aims at cultivating remarkable and innovative talents in Pediatrics through a student-oriented teaching system. Taking integrated curriculum on organ system as the framework, the Program offers standardized training of theory, PBL (problem-based learning), CBL (case-based learning), simulated teaching, clinical internship, resident doctor training for undergraduates. Students who pass the examination of undergraduate study can enter the three-year Pediatrics graduation study. Students who pass the examination and defense can obtain the Practicing Certificate of Registered Chinese Medicine Practitioner, certificate of standardized training for resident doctors, graduation certificate of Pediatrics masters, and master degree certificates of Pediatrics.

Graduates mainly engage in medicine, teaching, and research in pediatric internal medicine department, pediatric surgery department, children healthcare department and Children infectious diseases department in the hospitals.


Preventive Healthcare (five-year)

The program falls within China’s first-class undergraduate discipline development. With strong faculty and abundant teaching and scientific research resources, SJTUSM offers a dual degree program in "Preventive Healthcare and Administrative Management”.

Distinctive courses include Biological Module, lemology foundation module, internal medicine, chirurgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, infectious diseases, health statistics, epidemiology, sanitary science, occupational health and occupational medicine, nutrition and food hygiene, child and adolescent health, hygiene toxicology, healthiness education, health economics, health science of law and health supervision, social medicine and health services management. For students who minor in administrative management for a second degree, they take additional courses such as principles of political science, public administration, analysis of public policy, human resource management of public sector and health management in the context of evidence-based decision making.

Graduates are engaged in administrative management, health supervision, disease control, teaching and scientific research in government offices at all levels through China, health administrative department, disease prevention center, hospital, teaching research institution or enterprises.

Among them, Oral surgery is a national-level course, oral and maxillofacial surgery teaching team is national-level teaching team, and the virtual teaching and research office of stomatology course falls within the first batch of pilot projects approved by the Ministry of Education.

Integrated cultivation of “5+3” system in the stomatology lays a solid foundation for students’ occupational development. Graduates will be awarded Practicing Certificate of Registered Chinese Medicine Practitioner, certificate of standardized training for resident doctors, graduation certificate of stomatology masters, and master degree certificate of stomatology. Graduates mainly engage in medicine, teaching and research of stomatology in general hospitals and stomatological hospitals, some choose to continue for a higher degree.
