COLLEGE
OF BASIC MEDICINE
The college of basic medicine was founded in May, 1989. It
has become a teaching center for basic medical courses, scientific
research, staff training and the provision of health services
to the public. The college now has 422 staff including 113
professors and associate professors. Over 50% of the teachers
are postgraduates. The staff teaches basic medical subjects
to students of every level. The college has 21 teaching sections.
It presently has 7 key programs at the Shanghai municipal
level, 2 key programs at the university and 3 key programs
of ¡°211 Project¡±. It also has 8 specialties conferring Ph.D.
degree, 15 Ph.D. students¡¯ preceptors, 6 specialties conferring
Master degrees, 21 Master degree students¡¯ tutors and 1 post
Ph.D. location. Since 1989, the college achieved 350 projects
and many rewards from the local and central government.
THE
PUBLIC HEALTH TECHNICAL SCHOOL
The public health technical school was established in 1999
in response to the demand for advanced technical medical personnel.
Now it has six special training specialties including nursing,
medical science, stomatology, optics technique, medical insurance,
computer application, etc.
The
School of Public Health
The School of Public Health of Shanghai Second Medical University
(SSMU) was founded on May 22, 2002, incorporating the Department
of Health Care Administration and the Preventive Medicine
Section. It invited Professor Cai Renhua, President of the
Hygiene and Economy Research Institute, Ministry of Health
P.R. China to be the Honorary Dean. There are three specialties
in the School: preventive medicine, health management, and
medical-related specialty. Six subordinate sections are preventive
medicine, medical nutrition, health policy and management,
health information and basic management, medical psychology
and general practice. Today, the School of Public Health has
39 faculty and staff members. Among them, 16 have earned senior
titles, 6 have received a Doctoral Degree, 17 have received
a Master¡¯s Degree, and 3 are seeking a Master¡¯s Degree. The
priorities for development are the disciplines of public health
management and epidemiology. The School can grant a Bachelor¡¯s
Degree to students majoring in public health management, and
there are 139 undergraduates enrolled at the present time.
The school confers Master¡¯s Degrees in three subjects: social
medicine and public health management, environmental and occupational
hygiene, and nutrition and food hygiene.
REMOTE
EDUCATION COLLEGE
SSMU was approved by the Education Ministry to establish a
remote education program. Established in May of 2002, the
Remote Education College will train students for degree as
well as non-degree programs.
ADULT EDUCATION SCHOOL
Adult education school was established in 1996. Its predecessor
is SSMU evening university that was founded in 1958. The school
undertakes to teach adults medical continuing education. There
have been a total of 3455 students. 514 of them have received
their bachelor degrees. The school offers three education
levels: undergraduate degree courses, certificate courses
and post-diploma courses. These courses provided in 8 fields,
among them clinical medicine, medical laboratory science,
nursing and stomatology, etc.
HUMAN
SOCIAL SCIENCE DEPARTMENT
Human social science has over 30 staff including 17 professors
and assistant professors. They teach the ¡°Two Program¡± which
offers about 10 basic required courses. Also offered are over
30 elective courses like art in literature, employment guidance
and several courses integrated with medicine. The department
has been recognized as outstanding in research and education,
receiving prizes for their work on several occasions. The
department has successfully guided students to form scientific
thought, method and spirit, helping them improve political
consciousness and elevated levels of understanding. SSMU is
the model of Shanghai¡¯s various ¡°Two Program¡± teaching
programs.
